I was recently reading John's 2nd book, Anger Is An Energy, first before it started referencing this book. That's when I knew I had to read this book completely and it's well worth buying for those like me that either grew up or listened to that era of music.A lot of insightful answers from people who were there as it all happened, not as it was reported by heresay, rumor or sensationalistic reporting. The section that goes into affidavits was interesting, getting different versions from people directly involved on what happened on that US tour.Getting to know John's parents, his wife, his "mates", Steve, Paul, even Malcolm make this book more of an accounting of how it all happened from start to it's end.The excitement, the funny, the crazy, the tragic it's all there. Never Mind All That, Get This Book.
The first few chapters had me wondering if i were going to be able to get through this to the bitter end but John has a certain narrative style that takes a little getting used to and once you're in the zone it becomes a lot better. The man's certainly not without ego which in many regards seems counter-intuitive to the punk ethos but in fairness he quickly become 'legend' and few would not be affected by such a tag. Some wonderful insights into band dynamics; if it appeared chaotic from an audience perspective it was far worse from inside the machine. Malcolm plays hero/villain in equal quantities - an unusual chap to say the least. Loved John's unique view on 'the real' Sid, again a kind of love/hate relationship but sensed genuine sadness at his extremely premature demise.A recommended read for sure: next on my read list is Jones's 'Lonely Boy' as its good to try to gain more than one perspective plus of course Steve is an extremely colourful character; more than just your average rock band guitar playing hero... Enjoy!
Top Notch!I dont write reviews, most books aren't worth the effort nower days. Some people earn their right to write a book, while others.... well (don't get me started!) Lydon is one of the last men standing, a rare cat who only deals with the truth, no holes barred. This has become a radical act in a world full of hype marketing, imitation and BS. Refreshing read from perhaps one of the last great icons of our time Wow! My advice is watch the DVD 'Filth and the fury' and his new one 'Anger is an energy' to accompany this one.
Rotten paints a good picture of the chaos and turmoil that surrounded the emergence of punk rock in the late 70's. At times his account of events seem a bit to ludicrous to believe, but since he includes accounts by a vast array of people, you sort of have to accept that it is the truth. A good book, that tells the story of an angry group of teenagers, with a taste for the original, battling the established powers of record companies and media corporations, all the while being despised by much of the general public. He includes different accounts, even if they contradict him or insult him, which adds to the feeling that he is trying to shed light on what actually happened. A good read, that I can recommend.
John Lydon is brash, occasionally comes off as a bit pompous, and mighty opinionated for several pages at a go. Just what one expects from the man. But he also drops the bluster plenty enough to reveal a very thoughtful and well-educated viewpoint on things. One thing for sure- it's not a book to be lukewarm about. You'll either give it one star or five. And really, I think he'd want it no other way.
Even almost 40 years after the band's formation, I take everything I read and see about this band with a grain of salt. There's been so many varying and contrasting opinions expressed by band members and contributors/conspirators alike that it's hard to tell what's the truth and what isn't, not the least of whom is Mr. Lydon himself. In '76 he claimed he hated hippies, but here he is pictured with long hair and admitting to liking Hawkwind. He wore an "I Hate Pink Floyd" shirt and has a beef with David Bowie, but he quotes them both in this book. He claims to love it when other bands don't bother tuning, but bitches when Steve Jones' guitar goes out of tune. He's always voiced his hatred of "rock stars" but bitches about the Pistols not having good monitors. Sigh.....Anyways, this book is still a very entertaining read. It's definitely his words and attitude, and that comes across in spades. And to his credit, it includes several different viewpoints from others who were there at the same time.Overall a great read and highly recommended-just don't take his viewpoint as the absolute truth.
This missive penned by the one and only Johnny Rotten tells the story of the Sex Pistols from his vantage point. If you grew up exposed to punk music, you will get a very interesting story of what it was like to grow up In the UK during this time and what it was like to live inside the tornado that is the Pistols. Lydon provides not only names and dates but his opinions on the whys. He is articulate and intelligent, and while you might not agree with everything on which he opines, but you will walk away wit ha healthy respect for them.
"The book started out good with John talking about his childhood growing up, but than it talked about things I already knew about and it became boring. I also don't like how the book switches narrator's from different people talking. John should of just done the whole book himself without other people involved in it. John had another book just recently come out, so hopefully he is the only narrator and has added some more stories and details about his life.
